Stephanie's pick for our January read

Hi girls,

Stephanie's pick for our January 7 bookclub is (drum roll, please)....
The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins.

Here is a little blip about the book:
The Hunger Games (2008) is a young-adult science fiction novel written by Suzanne Collins. It was originally published on September 14, 2008 by Scholastic.[1] It is the first book of the Hunger Games trilogy.[2] It introduces sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives in a post-apocalyptic world in the country of Panem where North America once stood. This is where a powerful government working in a central city called the Capitol holds power. In the book, the Hunger Games are an annual televised event where the Capitol chooses one boy and one girl from each district to fight to the death. The Hunger Games exist to demonstrate not even children are above the Capitol's power.

Happy Reading!

update, just because it has been awhile

Hi ladies!

Just a few things...as we all know, bookclub is at Eva's this Friday (the book is While I Was Gone), by Sue Miller. I bet it will be so much fun and just gorgeous, with all of Eva's pretty Christmas decorations!

January bookclub is at Stephanie's house. So, Stephanie, can you have your book pick and let everyone know on Friday at Eva's house? We missed the library deadline to get our book reserved, so we will all have to get it on our own.

Bookclub is at Kathie's on February 4. Kathie, can you reserve the title at the library, possibly within the next week? That way, we can get the books the first of January. And...just to try to beat the system, the Geneva Park District gals cannot get the books from Batavia library, so can you email out your pick when you reserve it, so they can run to Geneva Library and get it before Geneva pulls it for our club? Run-on sentence and very confusing, I know!!!

What did everyone think of the book (Eva's pick)? Did everyone get it read? I had a hard time with it, only because I did not find it a page-turner or attention getting. I felt like I kept waiting for something to happen. Is that just me, or did anyone else feel the same way? It was a top pick of Oprah's, so I may just have been in a "mood"! :-)

Hope everyone is well!!!

Bookclub, November 5, my house

Hi Girls,

Just a reminder email that bookclub is this Friday, November 5, 8:00...at my house! I hope you are all enjoying the book. Can you reply and let me know who all we should be expecting to attend. Thanks, and Happy Halloween!!! :-)

Tuesday, October 12, 2010

Hey Girls! So, I chose a book and went in to request it at the library, and found out it is currently too popular for us to get. I decided to try a recommendation from the librarian since I was already there. They are bringing in copies of While I Was Gone by Sue Miller. I've just looked it up on Amazon, and it has decent reviews. My original pick was The Book Thief my Markus Zusak that had been a recommendation Shannon's friend had passed on. It has even better reviews....so maybe we will still be able to read it in the future. I'm just starting Renee's pick, time to go read!

November book club selection

Hi all,

Thanks to Gail for a fantastic bookclub evening last Friday. I must second what Kathie wrote in her email on Saturday...we really do have a wonderful group of women and I always enjoy spending time at bookclub. We are so awesome! haha! :-)

Ok, on to the book selection. As I mentioned on Friday, the book is "A prayer for Owen Meaney", by John Irving. 8 copies are on hold at the library for us to pick up. You will want to reference Bookclubbers of KC, when you pick the book up.

Eva, if you want the library to hold your books for all of us (for your November selection), you will need to go to the library and fill out a short paper with your selection on it. They need 4 or more weeks to get all the books. So, I guess we should all remember to just give them enough time to get the books in, when it is our month to pick. At least 4 weeks.

Happy Reading!!!!!

swagger on! (thanks for the commercial, Christina, that was hilarious)!

Bookclub this Friday, October 1 @ 8 PM

Hope you can make it to bookclub this Friday night! How many of you are finished reading?? I'm only half-way and need to get reading!!! So far I think it's really good-- it took awhile to keep all the characters straight. I know Eva finished it and really liked it. Hope everyone else is enjoying it.

Can you please reply to this post or send an email letting me know whether or not you can attend? Thanks!

Eat, Pray, Love movie date, anyone???

Hi everyone,

Three of us have been in cahoots regarding setting up a date for the movie and it looks like we are looking at the week of August 29th. Specifically, Tuesday night, August 31st.

Eva, I remember you telling me you wanted to see the movie, so I want to be sure we get a date that works for you. And, of course, everyone else too. If the 31st does not work, lets pick another date that week.

Those of us that are good for the 31st are:
Renee
Kathie
Betsy

Please reply and lets get this thing on the books!

Time for a bookclub movie, anyone interested?

Hi ladies,

Who is interested in a mid-August movie night? I really want to see Eat Pray Love and from what I am finding, it is starting in theaters August 13. Of course, we can go anytime after that and not necessarily on opening night. But, I am up for anything. I will suggest several dates, and see who is available and interested.

Do any of these dates work?
August 17 (Tuesday), 18 (Wednesday) , 19 (Thursday).

September Bookclub, Betsy's pick

First of all, thank you to Carrie for hosting last night's bookclub. Although we barely talked about the book (Country Driving, Peter Hessler) this month, we did talk about it a bit...and agreed that a few parts of the very very beginning were humourous. (Because that is as far as most of us got, with the exception of our super reader, Eva)! :-) But, the evening was fun and why we talked about insects and frogs to such great extent is anyone's guess! Who knew that frogs could kill dogs????? Factoid!

Betsy has picked her book. It is "A Reliable Wife", by Robert Goolrick. Betsy is hosting bookclub, not the first Friday of September, but the second Friday, since the first Friday is Labor Day. So, that date is September 10.

Good Reading!!!!

This is our monthly reminder that bookclub is fast approaching. Carrie is hosting bookclub this month, at 8:00. Can you reply to this post or send an email letting Carrie know whether or not you can attend? Thanks!

August Bookclub, Carrie's house...and the book is....

Hi all,

Ok, we have the book selection! Carrie has chosen Country Driving, by Peter Hessler. Bookclub meets August 6, so get to reading!!! I am excited to see what this book is about, I LOVE new books! Yeah!

The Shack, any thoughts?????

First, and finally, thanks for hosting bookclub in July, Shannon. I missed it, but so wish i had been there to sit on your breezy screened in sun porch and eat the delicious dips that I have been hearing about! Thanks for the recipes! I have asked many of you what you thought of the SHACK, since I missed BookClub. It seems like most of you really liked it, that it gave you all some new sort of perspective regarding some part of your life/and or friendships/family. I wish I could say the same, but I felt like I got nothing out of it and it actually was annoying to me. How terse is that?!?! I found it annoying because I A. could not keep interest in what God, The Holy Spirit and Jesus were saying to the main character...it seemed to repeat itself over and over again. Also, I wanted the little girl to be found and fine and happy and saved... :-( However, with that being said, since you all enjoyed it so much and have take-aways from the book, I am going to REread it and find a take-away too! So, that is MY perspective, in case anyone wanted to know. :-)

Thank you Eva!!!

Eva, thanks for hosting the family BBQ, it was so much fun! The kids had a blast too and were quite worn out by the end of the evening. However, I am very sorry for the mess I feel we must have left behind! I hope you were not up all night cleaning up after all of us. Thanks so much...what fun!!!

Shannon's hosting bookclub, Friday the 9th...

Hi all,

Bookclub is at Shannon's house, Friday the 9th and we get to talk and rave about or complain about Shannon's pick, The Shack.

I am sending out this reminder early, because I will be on vacation and now I get to CHECK this off my to-do list! :-) So, if you haven't read the book, you still have almost two weeks to read it. Can you reply to this post to let Shannon know if you can attend or not.

My family has had to re-jigger our vacation dates, and unfortunatly we will not get home until the day after bookclub. So, I will have to miss bookclub at Shannon's house, probably sitting on her breezy back sunporch, sipping something lovely and eating delicious yummies, with good friends. BUMMER!

Please let Shannon know if you can attend bookclub at her house so she knows how many of us to expect.

Thanks ladies!
Renee

Finally finished The Little Stranger, by Sarah Waters

....and thought is was fantastic!!! It took me a long time to read (like over a month), but once I got into the book, it was addicting. Good pick, Christina! I have been very sad since I have finished the book, not knowing what to do with myself. Seriously. Kind of wierd, I know! haha! Already read The Shack, so starting on Kathie's copy of Dear John (just in case anyone cared). See you all tomorrow at Eva's BBQ. -Renee

Ok, I think everything is settled

I have added everyone's email address so that if there is a comment made, you will receive an email AND if there is a post made, you will receive an email. Let's see if that worked! Testing, testing, testing!!! :-)

July bookclub and THANKS!!!!

Hi all,

Well, thanks for attending another month of book club! Christina, I think we all want your recipes, the pasta and bread thinga ma-jing-ga salad was soooooo fantastic! I could have sat at your counter and munched all night long!

Next up, is Shannon! July’s book club is at Shannon’s house, on July the 9th. Shannon, we are all reved up and ready to read the next book! (Ok, confession…I am still reading Christina’s book, and I am finally really into it! I love it)! Shannon, do you know what book you want to pick? We are all waiting with bating (sp?) breath, especially those of us who want to reserve it FIRST before any of you other gals at the library!   teehee

Another point that I would like to touch upon (sounds so official), I am going to be looking at our blog in more depth this past month. I would typically put this email in the blog, rather than email it out…but I have to just check to see how to make it happen that you are alerted via email that a post has been posted. Once that is all done, I think the blog could be a fun spot for us all to “hang out” and keep track of everything. So, more on that a little later.

Until next book club, HAPPY READING!!!!

Shannon's pick for July.....THE SHACK

Hi! There are so many books I'd like to read! Some of my top choices weren't readily available at the library, maybe in a few months there will be more copies to check out!

Until then, the July book club selection is The Shack by Wm. Paul Young. I know it's been a popular book, so I'm hoping that not too many of you have already read it.

I did put together a list of book that friends have suggested. Maybe one of these days I'll post the list on the bookclub blog. Until then, happy reading!
